Does blogging pay?
The question in the title drives people nuts. The answer is: yes, it does! But, as always there is an “if” in the context. I see young people, barely out of the school’s bench having blogs writing about their life, about their daily activities, posting YouTube videos. Which is a good thing. The bad thing is that they expect to get money for this. If you visit their blog all you can see is advertising, mostly AdSense all over the page, barely being able to make a difference between the content and the ads.
After a while they see that they are not getting enough clicks. Why? Not enough visitors. So? Let’s promote the blog, and here comes the fun part: group messages on instant messengers and on social networks like Hi5; leaving comments on other blogs which already have a quite impressive number of visitors saying “I wrote something like this, chick it out”; targeting networks like Digg, StumbleUpon and others asking all the friends to add your article to favorites. These are just a few examples.
What the brand new blogger doesn’t know is that doing this, he might get a few extra visitors, but if the content is not good enough to attract their attention, they will never come back, even if you flood them with messages or ask them nicely. Also, if their blog has no keywords to attract some well paid ads, they will never make the money they thought they will when started blogging.
Embedded videos are also a bad idea. If the content of an article is only a video, there is not text, which means no keywords, which leaves you out of the search engines and does not generate you the ads you would like on your site. You want to embed a video because you think it deserves to be shared? It’s ok, but write some content, ideas, short intro, anything along with it.
All I’ve been talking about is that blogging does not pay, although at the beginning of the article I say it does. Yes, it does! But only if your blog is well written, on unique content, content which is based on a specific niche. You want to make money out of blogging? Here’s how you do it: think about what you are good at, create a blog, start writing good, content and keyword rich articles, promote your blog in a “Christian” way, not by forcing people to come and take a look and after you have a stable number of readers insert your ads.
It takes time and lots of work, but if you want to make money from blogging, this is how you do it. If you stick with me, I might be able to help you with some good tips and tricks to shorten than time and make the work easier.
Until the next article, I wish you happy blogging!
